Fixtures

If you are already an OMGS member and haven't registered for a match or meeting, now would be an ideal time to do so.  The Match Manager will choose the team from those registered on the web site (and by telephone, email or any other means of your choosing), so the more members that register the easier it becomes for the Match Manager to get a full side.

Marlborough victorious in Bernard Darwin after 23 years

Marlborough regained the Bernard Darwin trophy for the first time since 1988 beating Charterhouse in the final.  After a comfortable victory against Rugby in the first round, Marlborough overcame Eton in the second.  This was an excellent win because Eton, much to the delight of all the other participating schools, had put out Tonbridge in the first round.  Tonbridge were the tournament favourites, who with the same team had monopolised the trophy for five consecutive years (2006-2010).  Nick Denny and newcomer Tim Parry won the deciding match at the first, which was in fact the sixteenth hole played because Marlborough's draw meant starting at the fourth tee for the first two rounds

Marlborough then faced Wellington with the pairing of Tim Martin-Jenkins and Malcolm Cornish, unusually for a semi-final, not having previously played any of the first three holes (neither of their first two matches had gone beyond the fifteenth hole played).  A birdie three at the first extra hole from the rock solid pairing of James Hopper and Robert Wace saw Marlborough through to the final in the deciding match

In the final, Marlborough faced Charterhouse, another school with an enviable reputation in public schools' golf.  Comfortable victories by Hopper and Wace (4/3) and Denny and Parry (3/2) saw Marlborough home 2-1

The winning team (from left to right): Malcolm Cornish, Tim Parry, Nick Denny (Captain holding the trophy), Robert Wace, James Hopper and Tim Martin-Jenkins

Inspired team selection by the Captain, Nick Denny, and unbeaten performances by the pairings of Hopper/Wace and Denny/Parry were keys to the team's success.  Great support from the spectators and the good wishes from those who could not make in person made all the difference

The magnificent Darwin Trophy was on display at the OMGS dinner in October, so hopefully you saw it then
